Mt. Kailash also well known as Tise, Kailash and Rinpoche (Jewel of the snows), has since time immemorial been celebrated in many eastern cosmologies as Mt. Meru, the axis mundi of the universe and as the centre of the physical and metaphysical universe. Mt. Meru is sacred to the Jains, the Hindus, the Buddhists, and the Bons. For the Hindus, the mountain represents the seat of Shiva, and, for the Buddhists, a terrestrial projection of the cosmic mandala of dhyani - Buddhas and Bodhisattavas; the wheel of life.
